"What do you want?" This is the first recorded question of Jesus' ministry - the first question he asked his would-be disciples (John 1:38). Asking and answering the question, "What do you want for Christmas?" is a common a part of the season's tradition. But during Advent, we have the opportunity to go much deeper into the true meaning of Christmas, by asking and answering Jesus' question: "What do you want?" The world's desperate need for a Messiah began in the Garden of Eden, and that longing is still felt in the hearts of every person on earth.
Nine Lessons and Carols
The very first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was held in Truro, England on Christmas Eve, in the year 1880. Since then, it has been borrowed and adapted by many churches around the world, but the purpose of the service remains the same: to tell the story of humanity's fall, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus.
In nine short Scripture readings and nine carols, the service beautifully illustrates how all of the biblical narrative points to Christ.
"But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. … That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. … And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself."
-Luke 24:1-3, 13-16, 27
This project was inspired by the Christmas Eve service we love to help lead each year at Cross Sound Church on Bainbridge Island, WA. We have been challenged and fed by walking through these Scriptures and carols, and by sitting with Jesus' question "What do you want?". We've also had lots of fun! We've gotten to work with talented musicians from our congregation, friends in the recording industry, and the other members of our band, Jubilee. It was especially fun working out arrangements for carols like "Hark! The Harold" and "Silent Night" in the heat of August. This is very much an album inspired by the Church, produced with the help of the Church and meant to be a devotional tool for the Church during the Advent season. What a privilege!
